ALMOST a third of pregnant local women had to travel more than 100 miles to give birth due to a lack of specialist facilities at Caithness General Hospital last year. AN indoor skatepark, cafe and gallery at a former US Navy base near Thurso, has won approval despite a trio of county councillors criticising the controversial development. Caithness Craft Art Skate Surf Ltd, yesterday secured permission from Highland Council for the facility at the on-time communications station at West Murkle. The plans were referred to the local authority’s north planning committtee after nine objections were lodged, including one from Castletown Community Council which had serious concerns about road safety.

ALMOST 100,000 tickets have been sold since Thurso Cinema first raised the curtain on its silver screens in July 2012. Over the past year, its operators have converted from 35mm to digital, introduced live performances and opened a new bar and restaurant.

PLANS to create a transport museum in Halkirk are to go on show, during two open days tomorrow and Saturday. The project aims to create the only tourist attraction of its kind in the Highlands, showcasing a range of vehicles from the last century.
FEARS that local art and produce will no longer be promoted in the museum shop at Caithness Horizons have been allayed. Director Beki Pope yesterday gave an assurance that was not the case and said the Thurso museum “is committed to its local suppliers”. She confirmed discussions were ongoing with VisitScotland about changes that are expected to be implemented from April.

WICK Academy is set to launch a new youth development system aimed at unearthing talented young footballers in the far north. The Highland League outfit is looking to appoint a youth development officer next month with the remit of scouring primary schools to help develop and nurture promising players.
A FORMER far north police commander turned councillor, has warned that any review of officer numbers in the Highlands must include face-to-face talks with sergeants and bobbies on the beat. Recently-elected Matthew Reiss, who previously served as Caithness, Sutherland and Easter Ross area commander said it was vital bosses seek the views of frontline staff after the Scottish Police Authority called for officer numbers to be scrutinised by university academics in a major policing review.

A MILESTONE will be reached tonight when the Wick senior citizens treat is held in the Assembly Rooms. It will be the 50th anniversary of the event which was first staged in 1964. Town councillors Gibby Fraser came up with the idea and the occasion was support by the then Wick Town Council and Provost William Dunnett. Another councillor W.G Mowat was the organiser and master of ceremonies for the inaugural party. Music for the occasion was provided by the Wick Scottish Dance Band.

ACADEMY’S run of six games without victory came to an end on Saturday with a scintillating first-half performance which saw all three points sealed before half-time. The performance brought smiles to the 500-plus crowd who continue to support the Scorries in large numbers despite their title challenge being all but over for another season. The final score was 4-1 for Wick.
