The Lighthouse

I'm standin on the coast so high
Makin sure sailors can see this coastline
For its dark and they cannae see
But they see ma light they'll be fine

I used to have a wee man inside me
Makin sure ma bulbs were workin'
But he got paid off he's no there anymore
No more songs fae him,I'm hurtin

But I have seen sunset horizons
And universal nightimes for years
But ma given task in ma given chore
Was so sailors had no fears

So I'll be here on ma own
Until ma bricks begin to cave
For I have lived and done ma task
In the lives I've helped to save

Eddystone and Wolf Rocks guard the sea,
A light strong brilliant for sailors to see.
Where skerries an' hidden dangers lurk
The light shines like a beacon in the dark.
Where wreckers used to false lights shine.
Where mariners went to meet the devine,
But still the true light shines above the sea.
A guiding light to you and me.

Crackin Lizz.Yer poem is excellent.I love poetry,I loved making ditties as a youngster,cos thats what mine are.To take a story or a part o yer days into rhyme.I think thats what I use ma ditties as,a way of remembering and celebrating.

I've always been rather fascinated by lighthouses myself. Although it's been a number of years since I lived in Thurso, I can still remember the plaintive call of the foghorn emanating from Holborn Head lighthouse. When I was a young girl, my family and I were lucky enough to have a tour inside its light, and that of Dunnet Head lighthouse as well!
