Thread: Plant advice

    Default Plant advice

I'm wanting to deter my chucks scratching on a bank at the back of the house. They scatter soil onto the chippings and make the weeds grow on the drive. The soil is pure peat, what shrubby type plants could i plant to stop them?

    Instructions
o 1Use some chicken wire to make a fence around the areas you want toprotect. This is not very pretty, but will keep the chickens out of yourvegetable garden and flower bed.
o 2Put some chicken wire on the ground, around the base of the plants. Thechickens will not like the feel of the wire on the bottoms of their feet, andthey will avoid the area.
o 3Instead of using mulch around your plants, use river rock gravel. Again, the chickens will not like how the rocks feel on their feet, and they willavoid the area.
o 4Another chicken-repelling idea is to plant very close together, leavingno open spaces between items. If the chickens cannot easily get in between yourplants and there are no open spaces of dirt where they can dig and scratch, they will no longer be interested in your garden and will leave it alone.
o 5 If nothing else works, try a motion-activated sprinkler. Anytime achicken goes too close to your prize tomatoes, the sprinkler will turn on and he will get a bath. Chickens don’t like to getwet, so it won’t take long for them to learn to stay away.

1Sprinkle handfuls of coffee grounds around the garden. Coffee grounds will repel the chickens from the area. Consult a garden expert to make sure the excessive amount of caffeine will not damage the plants. Repeat the application of coffee grounds once a week.

    Found these on some websites.

Hi, we had same problem, all we did was lay some chicken wire across the bank, then pegged it down, until grass grew again, also you can make holes in the wire and plant shrubs in between and leave wire down, all the best dooby doo.
