Caithness Courier headlines for September 18
OUTRAGED parents have claimed representatives of an evangelical Christian bus spoke to children without receiving their permission. Now they are demanding answers from Highland Council about why they weren’t told pupils from Pennyland Primary school had boarded a bus associated with a Christian outreach centre.
FEARS about a “supercluster” of turbines in Caithness – amid warnings of a renewable industrialisation – led to mixed results for expectant wind farm developers yesterday. A marathon planning debate in Inverness, which was ongoing as the Caithness Courier went to press, saw far north councillors at loggerheads about the merits of four separate developments.

A CAITHNESS business leader yesterday hailed the go-ahead for the first commercial marine energy project in the Pentland Firth as “a significant milestone”. Trudy Morris, chief executive officer for Caithness Chamber of Commerce, was speaking after the Scottish Government granted permission to MeyGen Ltd to install marine turbines in the Inner Sound.

WHEN Christopher Durrand was killed in a car accident on a road in Caithness, it broke the hearts of his close-knit group of friends. But 18 months on from the tragedy on the B876, near Bower, they are continuing to keep the 17-year-old’s memory alive, through charity fundraising events. The near£10,000 made from car washes and car cruise events has been donated to good causes in Wick.

SPORTS club members are to discuss the best way forward to improve leisure activities and facilities to help turn Thurso into a sports hub. High Life Highland will unveil what the main priorities are, to help transform the town into one of four community sports hubs across the Highlands, in a public meeting to be held at Thurso High.
CAMPAIGNERS against the privatisation of Royal Mail are being accused of scaremongering that the move will lead to a poorer service in rural areas. Far north MP John Thurso said customers will continue to receive regular delivery services and the same price to all across the UK, once the sell-off takes place in November.

ATHLETES from across the far north and further afield, ran up a first for the sport when they competed in a 10km course at a Highland wind farm on Sunday. About 100 runners took part in the Turbine 10 event held over the undulating service tracks around the Baillie wind farm, west of Thurso. Thankfully, some dire weather forecasts failed to materialised and the race went ahead in mild conditions.

EAST of Scotland League club Coldstream usually attract a crowd of 30 or 40 to their games at Home Park, so the influx of around 120 Academy fans created a real cup tie atmosphere in the small Berwickshire town. The home team certainly made a game of it early in each half, but Wick showed no sign of bus lag from their 320 mile journey and won – 6-0 – just a comfortably to ease their way into the second round of the Scottish Cup.
