Thread: Favourite line in a song

  1. #1

Default Favourite line in a song

My all time favourite line in a song has got to be from Dire Straits 'Romeo & Juliet'.......'I can't do everything but I'd do anything for you........'

also from ABC's 'Look of Love' ......if you judge a book by its cover, then you judge the look by the lover...'

Easy Peasy, and Reev will agree with me on this one:

"Even if i told you that I love you, would you tell me that you love me too, the way that I love You? Hawheehawheehawheehaw"

'Rob's Song' Written by Reev's dad

Mmmm Mmmm Mmmm Mmmm - Crash Test Dummies

I often wondered where Meat Loaf came up with the line "I would do anything for love but I won't do that" was his inspiration sharing his dinner with someone or something more sinister?

My favourite line from a song has to be......

"Well, I'm not the world's most physical guy,
but when she squeezed me tight she nearly broke my spine!"

From the Kinks song "Lola" , one of the funiest songs ever, for years I listened to it not knowing what it was about and someone told me, it then became even funnier

I always thought the guy from Crash Test Dummies was a great lyricist, you have to listen to the songs to appreciate the way the words flow and how funny they are, you can take any line from this song, I love them all. The whole God Shuffled his Feet album was a work of pure genius!

How does a duck know what direction south is?
And how to tell his wife from all the other ducks?
You can cut a chicken's head off
and it will keep on running and twitching

    [CHORUS]
    When everything seems planned out
when everything seems nicely planned out
well the human race will come smack your face

How come all my body parts so nicely fit together?
All my organs doing their jobs, no help from me!
    A person pulls a spider's leg out
To watch it keep on moving and twitching.

Satan lives here: on grain and earth, rain and air.

How come I just smoke and smoke and smoke
and curse every butt I spit out?
All night long I grind my teeth and I wake up when I cough
You can put me in and iron lung
and I will keep on breathing and twitching.

....if the days gave us walls we never wanted then the years will give us cover from the sky....

so far everyones favourite lyric seems to be love related. is this us all getting romantic for the forthcoming Valentines Day?

    There are so many....

I listened to this one recently and it struck me as really sweet.... (gushy sweet, but that man can really sing)

from Ne Me Quitte Pas (Don't leave me) - by Jacques Brel.

    [snipped]

    Moi je t'offrirai
    Des perles de pluie
    Venues de pays
    Où il ne pleut pas
    Je creuserai la terre
    Jusqu'apres ma mort
    Pour couvrir ton corps
    D'or et de lumière
    Je ferai un domaine
    Où l'amour sera roi
    Où l'amour sera loi
    Où tu seras reine
    Ne me quitte pas

    Me, I offer you
    pearls of rain
that have come from a Country
    where it doesn't rain

    I'll dig up the earth
    until after my death
    to shower your body
    with gold and with light

    I'll build a kingdom
    where love will be king
where love will be the law
    and you will be queen.
    Don't leave me.

Of course this sort of stuff isn't my usual musical nourishment

If you are in to chilled out house / jazz type stuff then it has to be Zero 7.

    Somersault...
You're the prince to my ballerina
You feed other people's parking meters
You encourage the eating of ice cream
You would somersault in sand with me

You talk to loners, you ask how's your week
You give love to all and give love to me
You're obsessed with hiding the sticks and stones
    When I feel the unknown
You feel like home, you feel like home

You put my feet back on the ground
Did you know you brought me around
You were sweet and you were sound
    You saved me

You're the warmth in my summer breeze
You're the ivory to my ebony keys
You would share your last jelly bean
You would somersault in sand with me

You put my feet back on the ground
Did you know you brought me around
You were sweet and you were sound
    You saved me

    What a gorgeous, gorgeous song....

Two songs spring to mind immediately. Both are in the 'rude and humorous' category.

"It's my belief that my big balls should be held every night"
    AC/DC - Big Balls.

Out of context it sounds rude, but when heard alongside the rest of the song, it's reasonable to assume that the song is actually about holding a ballroom dance or two. Honest 'Guv.

And the incomparable lyrical genius that is The Macc Lads. Rhyming couplets and depraved rugby songs that Wordsworth, Burns, et al would have given their favourite ribaldry-tipped quills for.

"She said I were good looking, she said I looked a bit like George Michael,
But she didn't want a [censored] 'cos she were on her menstrual cycle."
The Macc Lads - God's Gift To Women

Yes, rude. Shockingly filthy, disgusting and coarse. Also brilliantly funny and superbly written. After all, who else has come up with something to rhyme with 'George Michael'?

    Genius indeed.
"It makes my blood burn with metal energy..."

No, i don't or i would be called 'Stone Roses' or 'Happy Mondays'.
Plus having seen all three in concert i rate The Charlies much higher, and they are still on the go.

i'm reminded of the great (but not greatest) Happy Monday's line 'Twisting ma melons man'

    Default my favourite line

I'm the one distinctly plain to you, for a solemn glance is another hopeful taste
Did you wish for your pain? Did you wish for your pain?
Wish I could have faltered, wish I could have changed
I'm the one distinctly plain to you, for a solemn glance is another hopeful taste

I wouldnt say i have a favourite, but heres one that springs to mind-

'Is it cruel or kind not to speak my mind and to lie to you, rather than hurt you?
I'll confess all of my sins after several large gins but still I'll hide from you, cos i know its inside of you
and alarm bells ring when you say your heart still sings when you with me, wont you please forgive me?' - Pete Doherty.

Sorry for that, i know its a bit long as it only asked for one line, but its hard to pick line when the whole verse is that good!

I like ALL the lines in Led Zeppelin's "Battle of Evermore". The entire song conjures up such vivid imagery, that it's hard to choose a favourite line!

Queen of Light took her bow
And then she turned to go,
The Prince of Peace embraced the gloom
    And walked the night alone.

Oh, dance in the dark of night,
    Sing to the morning light.
The dark Lord rides in force tonight
And time will tell us all.

Oh, throw down your plow and hoe,
Rest not to lock your homes.

Side by side we wait the might
Of the darkest of them all.

    I hear the horses' thunder
    Down in the valley below,
I'm waiting for the angels of Avalon,
    Waiting for the eastern glow.

The apples of the valley hold,
    The seeds of happiness,
The ground is rich from tender care,
Repay, do not forget, no, no.
Oh,-------dance in the dark of night,
    sing to the morning light.

The apples turn to brown and black,
    The tyrant's face is red.

Oh the war is common cry,
Pick up you swords and fly.
The sky is filled with good and bad
    That mortals never know.

Oh, well, the night is long
The beads of time pass slow,
    Tired eyes on the sunrise,
    Waiting for the eastern glow.

The pain of war cannot exceed
    The woe of aftermath,
The drums will shake the castle wall,
The ring wraiths ride in black,
    Ride on.

Sing as you raise your bow,
    Shoot straighter than before.
No comfort has the fire at night
That lights the face so cold.

Oh dance in the dark of night,
    Sing to the mornin' light.
The magic runes are writ in gold
    To bring the balance back.
    Bring it back.

At last the sun is shining,
The clouds of blue roll by,
With flames from the dragon of darkness
    The sunlight blinds his eyes.
I am living for today, always remembering yesterday, and looking forward to tomorrow!
