    LEGAL high usage among adults in Caithness has increased significantly in the last year with a rise in the number of children being taken into care being attributed to the abused. Councillors and health chiefs have become concerned about the growing problem and said there must be more done to stop the rise in drug-taking and children being removed from the family home.


    EMPLOYEES at Wick's tax office are celebrating, after it was announced all 15 jobs look set to be saved as part of a new pilot scheme which will enable them to work from home. HM Revenue and Customs has indicated it will be looking to save the jobs of those working at the Girnigoe Street office by trialing a pilot scheme for home and remote work.

    SCHOOLS in Wick and Lybster could receive greater access to dental care after being described as being located in the most deprived areas in the Highlands. NHS Highland is considering plans to introduce mobile dental unit visits, twice a year to schools in the region including five in east Caithness.

    FAR north MP John Thurso has labelled Landward Caithness councillor Alex MacLeod "a little prat" for saying it would morally wrong of him to accept a proposed pay rise for backbench MPs. The MP reacted angrily to the independent councillor's claim that it would be "morally inexcusable" for him to accept a 15 cent pay rise in the face of public-sector cuts.

    A PLEA for a slice of Highland Council's £77 million war chest is to be spend on the region's roads, has been rejected by the authority's leader amid warnings about extreme winter conditions and the impact of welfare reform. Senior opposition councillor, Bill Fenie, had called for the the SNP-led administration to plough some of its budget reserves into the area's roads.

    UNION representatives from Caithness are accusing Highlands and Islands of unfairly steering multi-national companies to Inverness as a viable location to do business. Malcolm News, chairman of the Dounreay branch of the Unite union, said he and far north coleagues were concerned that the enterprise agency was neglecting the county in favour of the Highland capital.

    FARR HIGH'S 36th annual outdoor activities week took place before the end of term with 23 pupils enjoying a series of adventurous experiences in various locations along the north. Not quite in the usual sequence though, as for Monday, when the tradition two-day walk normally commences with a tripe diet of Indian canoeing, archery and archaeological investigation, was served up instead.
