Default End of the road for Caithness DE stores

State of economy and change in shopping trends to blame

STAFF at the Wick and Thurso shops of failed Scottish company D.E. Shoes will work their notice tomorrow with a closing down sale.
The retail workers are amongst 162 staff soon to be jobless after efforts to sell the family business as a going concern, failed.
The sale of five stores in March saved a quarter of the company’s total staff complement.
Managing director Robert Sinclair spoke of his “immense sadness” that it had proved necessary to wind it up the company, particularly in its 146th year.
He paid tribute to the support he had received in recent months from both staff and customers. Unfortunately, the trend in shopping habits had moved away from High Streets and the current state of the economy had seen customers cutting back on footwear purchases.
