    Default Dallas of Wick

    Hi
I have a reasonable amount of info from a family bible on my wife's mother's family (Dallas) who were from Caithness, mine close by from Sutherland.

Thomas Dallas was born 15 March 1836 in Parish of Wick. He married Elizabeth Dunnet (born in Parish of Bower, 11 Sept 1842. They had 12 chn

Alexander born 13 /8/1861; Thomas born 26/7/1863; George Dunnet born 18/10/1864; William born 10/4/1866; John Swanson born 24/7/1867; Elizabeth Jessica Agnes born 20/7/1869; Mary Christina born 28/7/1870; James born 31/7/1871; Joseph born 10/12/1873; Donald Stuart born 15/3/1876; Park Ereus Bower born 6/6/1877; Bessie Margaret Babara Dallas born 7/5/1881. I believe all born in Caithness.

We know Joseph died in Christchurch, NZ (1934); Donald died in Johannesberg in 1929.

Was wondering if anybody knew of the fate of the others, any Scottish migration records to NZ or the US or any other details. Many thanks for any info you may have. Regards - - Hamish Mackay (NZ)

    Morning Hamish

I checked Caithness birth records and no sign of your family births and also Thomas was not recorded in the 1861 census in Caithness. Guess where all these children were born ? In New Zealand. Go to the web site below and type in the surname Dallas and dates between 1861 and 1881 and you will find them.

Check the same site for marriages and deaths - you never know what you will find.

    Happy hunting !

    Morning again Hamish

If you go to the site below and search for Dallas in the cemetery section, you will find most of your family there . Thomas and Elizabeth were married in Bower in 1860 so would have travelled to New Zealand in 1860 or early 1861 so that will enable you to narrow the search for the ship they came on.

I decided to have a last look at the shipping lists before I head out into a rain swept Brisbane and found Thomas and Elizabeth on the Henrietta - left Glasgow on 30th May 1860 to Port Chalmers arriving 4 August 1860 as assisted emigrants.

That is all for today !!!
