Default Additional cases from this week's sheriff court

Benefit fraud amounted to more than £2000

A WOMAN embarked in a benefit fraud to make ends meet with her domestic budget, Wick Sheriff Court earlier week.
Marie Wood, 33, admitted defrauding the Department of Work and Pensions to the tune of £2,198 between August 15, 2011 and June 29, 2012.
It was claimed that she had tried to take steps to report a change in her circumstances but there had been a breakdown in communications and she continued to receive benefit.
David Barclay prosecuting said that Wood had become “desperate” when faced with various household bills. The Department is recovering the cash they paid out, by reducing Wood’s benefit.
Sheriff Andrew Berry said that that the misappropriated cash might have had a knock-on effect on someone else’s benefit and as the repayments would take a considerable time to complete, the public purse would be disadvantaged.
Wood was ordered to carry out 100 hours community service.

    Breached community payback order

A THURSO man who flouted a community payback order could be facing a stiff prison sentence.
Darren Bruce, 28, appeared from custody and admitted the breach. Sheriff Berry noted that the accused had contacted Lauren Calder while he was in prison, against the terms of order. It was imposed in October when Bruce, of Brownhill Road, Thurso, admitted behaving in a threatening or abusive manner at Miss Calder’s home in Thurso, in September, and shouting and swearing at her.
Sheriff Berry told Bruce: “It is shamefully obvious that you have no regard whatsoever for any order of the court”.
The sheriff allowed the payback order to continue ahead of a review in a month’s time when he said he would consider whether to allow it to run, or impose a substantial prison sentence.

Do your unpaid work - or else

THE sheriff again underlined his concern about people who don’t take their unpaid community work seriously.
He told Lateishia Bremner, 20, who breached her order: “The impression you give, is that you can carry out this work from time-to-time when it is convenient for you. Other people want to get on and complete their work but can’t do so because you have wasted the supervisor’s time.”
The sheriff warned Bremner of Grant Street, Wick that the matter was not going to go away and that he wants to hear that she is co-operating fully, in a review, in a month’s time.
He warned: “Otherwise, all options will be open to me.”

    Costly drugs

CAUGHT with 25 valium tablets cost Scott Wares a £400 fine.
Wares, 25, of Northcote Street, Wick admitted possession of the Class C drug.
The offence occurred on November 17, at The Shore, Wick.
