Default Additional cases from Friday's sheriff court session

Disqualified driver travelled only short distance onto public road court hears

A CAITHNESS man broke a ban when he travelled a few yards from his driveway onto a public highway.
James Beresford’s disqualification would have expired some 28 days later, Wick Sheriff Court heard.
Beresford, of The Smithy, Achscrabster, Glengolly, admitted driving while disqualified and without insurance. He was fined £150 and incurred six penalty points.
Sheriff Andrew Berry was told that the 25-year-old HGV driver was spotted by police reversing into his driveway, on March 25, last year.
Solicitor Jo McDonald said that Beresford might lose his job if he was disqualified, again and it would also have repercussions for his family as they lived in a country area.
Sheriff Berry told the accused, who is subject to a community payback order, that the circumstances of the case were “rather unusual” and “pretty much exceptional” but that he was duty bound to impose penalty points.

Comply with community service order or else...

A YOUNG Wick woman was warned that she could face detention if she doesn’t turn up for all her remaining unpaid community work allocations.
Latitia Bremner, 19, was ordered to carry out 45 hours service after admitting acting in a threatening or abusive manner, when she appeared previously, in October last year.
She was observed by police carrying a kitchen knife, between Macrae Street and Upper Dunbar Street, Wick, on July 15 and threatening to self-harm herself.
Bremner, of Grant Street, admitted on Friday, having failed to comply fully with the order.
Sheriff Berry commented that, according to a background report, Bremner didn’t appear to appreciate the gravity of her situation.
Solicitor Neil Wilson said: “I have explained to her that there are days we all don’t feel like going to work but still have to.”
Sheriff Berry told Bremner: “It is not something you do or not do...you will carry it out. It is very important that you do, because if not, you may find yourself going to detention.”
The case was continued until January 24 when the sheriff will receive an update on the accused’s progress.

Misled police on vandalism at his home

A WICK man who misled the police was ordered to carry out 40 hours unpaid community service.
Peter Todd, 29, admitted wasting police time. He told officers who arrived at his home on November 25, last year, that he had been the victim of vandalism. In fact he had broken the bathroom window at his home in Seaforth Gardens, Halkirk, himself.
Sheriff Berry described the needless waste of the police as a public service, and their resources as “completely unacceptable” and said the community service would give the accused an opportunity to give something back to the community.
