The following Caithness MacDonald families are now confirmed by Y-DNA as being connected within a genealogical time frame.

- John McDonald, cattle drover and tacksman of Achscoriclate married (<1790) to Barbara Gordon (Barbara emigrated to Pickering, Ontario after John's death in 1840).
- Farquhar MacDonald, Glutt married (1784) to Mary McDonald, Forsie. Emigrated circa 1805 to Gayes River/Shubenacadie, Nova Scotia.
- Donald McDonald, Breakachie, Water of Dunbeath married (1785) to Barbara Gunn, Strath Halladale.
- George McDonald, Shurrey/Brubster married (<1788) to Morach (Mary) McLeod.

I believe the following two couples would also be proven as connected if a male descendant were to test:
- Alexander McDonald, Achscoriclate married (1788) to Janet MacKay, parish of Reay (witnesses in OPR baptisms).
- William McDonald, Glutt married (1785) to Elizabeth MacKay, Uag of Dunbeath

A descendant of the following couple is in the process of testing:
- William McDonald married (1802) to Barbara Cameron - emigrated to Garden of Eden, Nova Scotia (Parents believed to be Alexander McDonald, Brubster and Elizabeth Campbell)

Y-DNA is passed from a father to his sons and thus follows a surname. It is not inherited by female descendants.
I am keen to track down male MacDonald's who have origins in the parishes of Latheron, Halkirk and Reay who might be willing to investigate using Y-DNA to confirm relationships between families.
Also keen to identify any Wick MacKain's as we know of one MacKain who matches the above MacDonald participants.

There was a Donald MacDonald who had children in the parish of Latheron between 1754-1760 at Braemore and Uagmore one of whom was a Farquhar MacDonald b.1756. I would been keen to make contact with any descendants.
The rare forename Francis is also a possible identifier in Latheron MacDonald families connected to the Achscoriclate and Glutt families.

The deep ancestral origins of the lineage is Norse Viking identified by marker L165 (also known as S68). Medieval paternal connections are with the MacNeils of Barra, MacDonald Buies of Jura and some Carmichaels of Lismore.

I'd be keen to hear from any Campbell's (MacIver/McIvor/Iverach) of Quoycrook, Comlifoot and Brubster who are believed to be connected to the MacIver Buey of Stronshiray, Lergachonzie and Asknish in Argyll.

New Y-DNA match this week for the MacDonald R-L165 group -William MacDonald b.1766 (probably Farr) died 1844 Orkney, living at Newlands (nr Bettyhill), Farr in 1811 census.
