Does anyone know what type of owl is heard from mount vernon this past few nights and is it maybe 2 owls? What a beautiful sound, usually most noisy between 11pm and 2am.
Thanks

Sorry cant really, it's so annoying I can hear them or it outside now, sounds like 2 different calls.1 being a bit longer. 1st call is just like a woo wooow and the next call has an extra bit added on, like a fancier version of the 1st call. Sry for not bein much help.
Helo Lydia, You could have a search on this link and see if it helps. Have a look at Shoteared owl, Longeared owl. Barn owl, I dont know if you get Tawny owl in Caithness but i think thats your lot for the county....hope it helps!

Thinking about it again and you could also ask the Caithness birding group on face book for an oppinion. They are a frendly bunch with a very active group...

Definitely do have tawnies over here dafi and are they not the only owl that has a double call?
Sure it's not collared doves you are hearing - hear them a lot in Mt Vernon.
If it's woo-ooing (so-called hooting) it's a Tawny Owl male, the female generally makes a kewick kewick call. If there's 2 birds woo-ooing then it's 2 males probably each in it's own territory letting one another know where they are.
