Thread: Advertising banners on the forum

  1. #1

Default Advertising banners on the forum

Who chooses which ones to display?

I've just done a clean install of Windows and logged on to the Org.

    I was greeted with this:

I'm actually a bit shocked something like this came up. I'm far from a prude but I thought this may shock a few orgers!

And for those of you who are wondering, after an exhaustive search, I never recognised anyone!

Was there a phone number come with it?

Since this is hardly an adults only website, maybe someone needs a word with whoever supplies their advertising. I was a bit surprised by a dating site that appeared recently but it wasn't as bad as this.

The banner ads are supplied via Google advertising. We signed up to delete certain types of ads but we do not control it directly. Google advertising tracks many things to decide which ads to display on any given page. It is not related directly to Caithness.org but partially to profiling from searches you make online. The probability is that most of you see a different ad even when looking at the same page as everyone else. If you recently searched for cars then you may see more car ads. Of course there are many factors and I cannot say why you get an ad like the one you saw. I will look into it to see if anything needs tweeked.

How come I don't get ads for Local Slags? The ones I see are for mature ladies nearly as old as my Mum. Google have lost their touch.

I get ads like this too and for no reason. My browsing history would not give any reason for it and even if I run ccleaner etc I get it too. I really think it should be checked, I have mentioned before the fact that I get adult based ads and then even posts with a single naughty word get deleted. But I got told off for mentioning it, and they just brushed me off with an "it's google ads, not our decision" excuse.

Of course the best way to avoid it is to use adblock plus.

You will get ads like that irrespective of your browsing history. I've looked at this forum from many corners of the world in the last six months, and I always get unsavoury ads. It's unnecessary, and (as you suggest) it's incommensurate with the the forum's family image.

Bill, as I explained in my OP I had done a clean install of windows 20 mins before this. I searched for winrar and pollards mortgage shop before coming to Caithness.org so I don't think your answers right.

I'm afraid I agree with Martin - ads are not necessarily related to our browsing history. Some are - two sites I looked at recently pop up everywhere I go now but that's normal these days. Maybe Google need to sort their filters for community sites like this.

I have just tried to cancel Sky online and gave up. Came on the org for some light hearted banter (lol) and was greeted by a banner advert to join Sky+HD..............the very thing I am trying to be rid of!!

Why do we need to be bombarded with these ads anyway?
Surely it woul dbe better if local businesses payed a few quid for advertiding space on the org, rather than grab a gran ads.
I knew the org was on a downward spiral but this is taking the Mickey a bit!!!

It's a dishonest ad. The blonde lady in the white dress isn't a local - she's a Brazilian porn star.

Now that you mention it, there is a slight resemblance between the two. I wouldn't have noticed if you hadn't asked. Thank you.
