Have a day out at the Orkney Show

The weather is set fair for the isles' premier agricultural event

WITH the Caithness agricultural show season over, farmers and crofters and other folk who simply enjoy a day out, have an opportunity to cross the Pentland Firth to attend Orkney’s final event, its county show, on Saturday.
Now in its 126^th year, the isles’ premier event is always a crowd-puller. Entries have been maintained on most sections with the exception of horses which are slightly down on last year. A new section has been introduced with a trophy for the best group of three cattle from one exhibitor.
Like so many agricultural shows, the Orkney event is very much a family affair with entertainment and side shows, the main centre ring attraction being the Philip Gibbons Ridgeside Falconry, one of the most experienced and dedicated falconers in the UK. Black Isle sculptor Ian Chalmers will be demonstrating his chainsaw skills, fashioning figures out of wood.
The show is an ideal opportunity for local traders to showcase their wares, craft and food. The honour of show president falls to Kelly Coghill, the third woman to hold the post. Recording her 21^st year in the ever-demanding role of secretary, is Marny Mowatt. Weather forecast for the show, at Bignold Park, Kirkwall, is promising.
