Default Wick gala weathers the poor weather

Receipts down but organisers in good heart despite wet week

WICK ‘s annual gala receipts were down on last year’s figure but the event organisers were not disheartened.
Event committee chair Donna Plowman said that despite the poor weather they didn’t have to cancel a single item on their programme.
Counter attractions on the gala’s final day, Saturday, the daily Olympics on television and the current economic climate, were additional factors.
Takings for the week, grossed £12,814, £1,900 less compared with last year.
Mrs Plowman paid tribute to the “fantastic” loyalty of locals and tourists who defied the rainy conditions, particularly on the crucial opening night, which features the crowning of the gala queen and procession of decorated floats.
She added: “And of course, if wasn’t for the continuing support of the business community and the many people who give so much of their time, freely, each year, the gala couldn’t continue. Last but by no means least, there's my gala committee who do so much work during the year to make the event a success.”
