Default Youth contract welcomed at bakery

Secretary of State Michael Moore applauds local participation

LOCAL Liberal Democrat campaigner and Thurso candidate for the Highland Council, Nick Noble was accompanied by the Secretary of State for Scotland, Michael Moore and local MP John Thurso for a visit to the successful Thurso bakery, Reids of Caithness today.
The bakery, which employs 40 staff in Thurso, is one of a number of businesses in the Far North which have signed up to Nick Clegg’s £1 billion Youth Contract which was launched today and is aimed at tackling youth unemployment.
Michael Moore and Nick Noble heard about Reids’ expansion into the Chinese market, their range of biscuits for Jamie Oliver and the key contribution that recent school leavers have made to the business’ expansion. One of the rising stars is Tammy Rendall who started off as an apprentice with Reids of Caithness just ten months ago and is now the company Health and Safety manager. Tammy also project managed the recent refit of the fish and chip take away following last July's fire.
The Youth Contract aims to ensure that all jobless young people are earning or learning again before long term damage is done. In the Far North 410 young people are currently in receipt of Jobseekers Allowance and stand to benefit from this vital coalition government initiative.
Commenting on the visit Nick Noble said: “Reids of Caithness is a great example of the many dynamic local businesses we have here in Caithness. It was fantastic to hear of the contribution young school leavers have made to the business and I know Michael Moore was impressed to hear about their plans to create even more apprenticeships in the future. The launch of the Youth Contract today will play its part in making sure more young people in the Far North have the opportunity to develop their skills and get into long lasting jobs.”
John Thurso MP said: “I have mentioned the successes of Reids of Caithness many times to Michael Moore and he jumped at the opportunity for a tour on his visit to Caithness this weekend. On a recent visit to China for the Treasury Select Committee I was delighted to see how successful their products have become in that rapidly maturing market. There are real opportunities available there for our local manufacturing and engineering companies and the Youth Contract will help ensure more young people locally have the skills to participate in that success in the future.”
