    Default chimney problems

    Hi all

Ive had a chimney fire recently and found that trying to find someone to inspect it via a camera very tricky!has anyone else found this?

also it wasnt a bad fire and i put it out very quickly but im worried about residual damage to the inside of the chimney thus the inspector but as its a private rented house i have been asked to get someone to look at it but i have talked to a specialist and i have taken advice from him but im still amazed that so little is available for this issue (i.e camera guy etc)

i have brought a camera for the job so when it arrives i can assess the damage if any further up so if anyone needs anything like this done give us a holler and when ive tested this kit out i could help others

im using the fire at present (carefully)as i have NO smoke getting into the house nor have hot chimney breasts and im keeping the fire very small(coal)so to avoid problems plus ive cleaned the chimney very well and will do more often (once a month or once every 2months if im burning wood)

so clean those chimneys everyone while the weathers ok

lucky it wasnt a bad fire really and its made me inforce my attention to the shoddy fire safty system installed by the landlord like the **** fire extinguiser i tried to use and the shoddy fire alarms!!

having 4 kids in the house and having this happen makes you remember the important things that matter so go press those buttons on your fire alarms and check the expiry date on those extinguisers and get a good fire blanket and some carbon monoxide alarms as i have too!

    keep safe all

Why not just forget about it? That's what I'd do.

What on Earth kind of extinguisher would put out a lum when it's up?

surely if your renting then it's not your problem, get your landlord to sort it thats what you pay your rent for. i maybe wrong but i'm sure he has a legal right to fix it

I'd get a Carbon Monoxide detector if I were you - it always helps.

I had same problem several months back with a coal fire and the chimney went up in flames and collapsed internally (which helped extinguish it i must add!) so i was stuck without any type of heating in the house. I phoned the landlord and he got one of his "mates" round but when he found out the extent of the work required he didn't give a hoot about it (also despite me seeking legal advice as he was responsible for the work) he also mentioned that i should claim on my insurance?? yeah right!! so now he has an empty house and i forsee it like that for a long time. serious work rebuilding a chimney and needs next door rehoming throughout the whole job as their chimney breast suffered damage too (his house as well so gonna cost him) another thing i found out is to check if your chimney has a metal flue? some councils require a metal flue insert to be fitted now. This may not be relevant to around this area but certainly was down in Manchester area.

scott you must of had a right roarer!!

i feel for you mate and id be in the same boat if the same results had happened to me! but luckly i managed to put it out without the fire brigade and in a very small timespan!!!

i have got minor damage! just above the back boiler on the chimney liner but its tiny! and il repair it with heat proof mortar soon(when i can get some gunk)

but when the camera gets here il assess the rest and take it from there!

my landlord cannot afford a big cost with callouts or repairs but does have insurance, so if the worst happens ill get him onto it !but i have found a cheaper option with ebays metal liners if i need to save some money for him, he is a good bloke and i try to help out the best i can with general repairs that i can do that would normally cost stupid money done by a professionasl!!(call out/labour/matierials/time/etc etc).

but if its bad and something i cannot afford or its serious landlord stuff (things that he needs to keep up with)as he is a relativly new to the landlord stuff)so i make sure i keep him informed of anything he should know and wether he should do it by law or if needed i can do it aslong as im confident i can do it 100% as i dont like bodge work!!!

but also i will do nothing that could impede his insurance and i will always contact a specialist before i agree to do anything like that!

Its not like im a useless tenant and i have had allot of expirience in many fields of diy so im happy to help save money

im just glad the fire wasnt a bad one as the house is 1800 in construction and very dry !so it wouldnt have taken long to burn to the ground!!

    SIDS
what do you mean?forget about it???

    which bit!?
the chimney and the possible risk of carbon monoixde leaks and smoke inhalation or the risk of the house catching fire through broken mortar in the chimney breast!

i know im probably worrying about nothing but it doesnt hurt to play on the safe side when you have kids in the house! so if putting afew more monoxide alarms or smoke alarms in the house gives me more time to get my kids out the house, il spend money on doing it! and also it has made me plan ahead more clearly with regards to a escape plans etc and fire exits (im going to put a board on the garage roof leading to a window that doesnt open, so we can smash it in the event of trouble and being trapped)

i might worry, but once ive done these SMALL things i can rest easier knowing im not going to become a victim in the dead of night!!

so what did you mean mate?

maybe im just too much a thinker but its always been the way! and its a good traight as its something that is employed in many things in life and jobs !like military planners and stratagy which im good at and when i took the army test i scored very well in the barb!but didnt take it further as i was a teenager with many things going on(girls oh well

    stay safe

Well, how many times has it been up, since 1800? Bet this is the first time the occupant has called in a proctologist with a camera! Why didn't you get it examined when you moved in, you reckless kitten-gasser? Don't want to worry you (haha), but will the camera see all the soot-covered cracks? Let's pressure test it with a Hoover.

Is smoke now getting into the other rooms? No? Then there can't be a very big hole in the lum.
