Far North will be hard hit according to forecast
MULTI-AGENCY partners met this evening to review the weather situation in the Highlands and Islands.
There is a potential for flooding in a number of areas and as temperatures drop there is a risk of ice on roads and motorists should drive according to the prevailing road conditions.
It is expected that Caithness and North Sutherland will be badly affected by snow and very high winds through the night according to weather forecasts.
As a precaution, the Highland Council have taken a proactive decision to close all schools and council run nurseries in Caithness and the North coast of Sutherland. These schools will be closed to pupils tomorrow (Friday) on the basis of the adverse weather forecast. In other areas of the Highlands, decisions on school closures lie with the head teacher, who will assess the local conditions. Please see the Highland Council website for further information
Superintendent Philip MacRae said: "We are continually monitoring the situation across the Highlands and Islands. It is a constantly changing picture, however all agencies are well prepared and responding accordingly. I would appeal to anyone travelling to check road conditions, the latest weather reports and ensure that they and their vehicle are well prepared for the journey. Travelling during severe weather conditions carries the risk of long delays.
Spt MacRae added: "Travel across Scotland has been adversely affected by the severe weather and many people may be displaced due to road closures and cancellation of trains, ferries or flights. The Local Authority has identified a number of locations where rest centres can be opened where necessary. If anyone is stranded by the severe conditions they can telephone the following number for assistance: 01463 715555."
