Thread: Laptop Virus?

  1. #1

    Default Laptop Virus?

My son has just been on the internet and probably has a virus.

It says he has a critical error and hard drive failure, and it looks like it is a proper Microsft site, saying this. We do not believe it is.

Laptop is four months old. laptop is 64 bit, running Windows 7.

Using Microsoft Security Essentials doing a quick scan showing 2 threats, which he is just removing.

    Can anyone help please?

The computer is shutting down on him, without him doing this.

He obviously doesn't want to click on the threat warnings.

    Please help.

download using another PC combofix from :

    http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/down...virus/combofix

shutdown the lappy with the virus

reboot it in safemode with networking [via F8 key when you power on]
connect the lappy to your internet BY AN ETHERNET CABLE first

when logged in to the lappy

pop in the penstick and run combofix
    ignore the anti-virus warning

    let it do its job

    could take 30mins.

    when its fixed

    login again nornally
make a new user called ADMIN [with adminstrator rights]

    log out as your son
    log in as admin

then make your son a LIMITED USER

NEVER EVER browse the internet with a user that has administration rights

Thank you dx100uk for your reply, we did manage to remove the virus yesterday, before I saw your reply, it was a trojan and the data has been submitted to Microsoft. He did have some damage to his programmes but has successfully restored the computer to an earlier date.

I intend to print off your advice, to prevent this happening in future. Many thanks for taking the time to help my son, it is appreciated and I'm sure other people will find your advice useful.

    All the best,

    TudorRose
