    Default Constabulary's festive alert

Don't let thieves or conmen take the merry out of your Christmas

THE police have issued a careful Christmas code to householders in Caithness and elsewhere to save them festive heartbreak.
The alert has been prompted by a case of alleged dishonesty in Shetland and has highlighted the need for you to take some simple precautions to prevent opportunist crime in the run-up to Christmas when there are expensive items lying around.
These, says Chief Inspector Angus McInness of Northern Constabulary, should be kept out of sight, preferably, locked away. The same goes for extra cash, you might have in your wallets, or handbags.
Extra special care should also be taken when answering the door to cold callers and workmen you don't recognise and you should be satisfied about their identity and if need be, insist on identification. They should never be left alone.
Further crime prevention advice can be found on the Northern Constabulary website;- www.northern.police.uk
Police inquries into the incident in Shetland are continuing and a positive line of inquiry is being followed.
