Thread: Faulty PSU or Motherboard

  1. #1

    Default Faulty PSU or Motherboard

My PC suddenly died and thinking that it was a faulty PSU I bought a new one (PSU). This however has failed
to solve problem and PC is still dead.
The pilot light on MoBo lights up but that is as far as it goes, none of fans or drives operate so it obviously
won't power up. I have checked all connections but everything looks in order. Unfortunately I do not have a
    multimeter to check PSU

Is this a case of the new PSU being faulty or is it more serious

Could be the graphics card that dead. I had similar problems and replaced both PSU and Mobo before I finally tried the gfx card.

If the gfx card has died, nothing will start (fans etc).

    Thanks Niall & Sid222.
Removed Graphics Card (MoBo has a built in graphics adaptor) but PC still dead
Is there any way of testing PSU without meter?
I tried plugging in a spare HDD into PSU when not connected to PC, but no sign of life from HDD or fan on PSU

you cant check the psu as such with multimeter
as the 4 block connector 'signals'
    the psu to fire up.

are you sure its not something as simple as the triac on/off switch
take out the ram/processor/graphics and anything else on the psu leads inc dvd / hdd

    then try
you should atleast get a pulse on the fan of the psu upon powerr

have you got a system [case] fan as well as a cpu fan?

    that should run regardless

    Thanks for all help
Have just tried a replacement PSU (second) and still dead.
MoBo is a an Asus M2A-VM HDMI, and graphics card an XFX Gforce 6 series

Tried removing Graphics card and replacing MoBo battery . Also ensured that all leads were fitted correctly onto MoBo and disk drives.
When I turn on PC the case fan makes a "jerk" but does not power up.

It now looks like that either MoBo or CPU is U/S, but should I replace first?
