the answer i had was 1879.
But after Tristan had said he applied for patent in 1880, which was invalidated in 1883, then he finally got validation in 1889.
So i thought i better look into this further

    Electric Lights.
    application date Oct 14th 1878
    issued on April 22nd 1879

    Apparatus for electric lights
    application date Feb 1879
    issued Feb 10th 1880

    Electric light
    application date Feb 3rd 1879
    issued May 4th 1880

    this was found on www.tomedison.org/patent.html
I thought the question was for the light-bulb itself, which in my humble opinion concerned the encasement of the filament in a near-perfect vacuum, which was the patent (no. 223,898 for anyone who really cares) I was referring to.

You are correct that Edison had patents for electrical light apparatuses (apparati?) in 1879, but as these mostly referred to improvements in the method of conduction, not the bulb itself, I didn't think that was the answer the question was looking for. My apologies if I was mistaken!
