    Default Surfer sentenced

Fined for possessing knife at Thurso event

A CHAMPION French surfer who admitted possessing a knife during his stay in Thurso where he was competing in a tournament, was fined £500 at Wick Sheriff Court today.
Charles Martin from St Francois, Guadeloupe went to a party, in the Caithness town, on April 18, with friends but they got a hostile reception and fled after being assaulted.
The surfer who is the current European champion and ranked third in the world went back to his hotel and “foolishly” armed himself with a cutlery knife. Martin (21) went to look for a friend but encountered a mob and fled. He met the police ,hortly afterwards and admitted he had a cutlery knife in his possession.
His agent told the court that Martin had been unaware that carrying a knife was an offence in this country. His actions had thrown into doubt the 60,000 euros-a-year sponsorship, he receives from Nike.
