Old photo

I have an old photo on what appears to be metal of some kind, maybe tin. Can anyone tell me if this was a regular thing in the past or was it someone having a 'go' at altering or preserving the photo.

No problem, I had dealt with them when I was involved in the museum cataloguing etc.
