John O’ Groat Journal review September 9, 2011

THE paper leads with the suggestion that NHS dental waiting lists will be a thing of the past, by the end of this year, according to the head of a new dental practice. Dr John Barry made the pledge after revealing the Bridgend Healthcare Centre in Thurso, which reopened its doors on Monday under his management, will be leasing the new dental unit at Dunbar hospital. NhS Highland became the first health board in the country to create a general dental practitioner lease for the £1.2 million facility, which is due to open in October. Speaking to the John O’ Groat Journal , Dr Barry said the Bridgend Healthcare Centre will offer private treatment while the Dunbar unit will offer 100 per cent NHS treatment.

fifteen seamen who perished in a wartime tragedy in Wick Bay were remembered last week in a service at the Kirkhill Garden. The Isleford was carrying munitions and other supplies when she was swept ashore in a terrible gale below Proudfoot on the north side of the harbour, in 1942. Veterans and friends attended the ceremony at which the names of those lost, were read out and a plaque bearing their names, was unveiled, by the county’s Lord Lieutenant, Miss Anne Dunnett.

family OF A Wick man who was a victim of the 9/11 terrorist attacks in America spoke of their loss as the 10th anniversary of the atrocity approached. Ann Policelli, who lives in Cambridge, said she misses her brother Ian Gray, every day. “He is always with us” said Ann, describing him as “a fun fellow” and adding the his death was “heartbreaking”, for the whole family, particularly, his mother Kathleen, who died a year ago. Mr Gray was on board the American Airlines flight 77 which was hijacked by terrorists and crashed into the Pentagon.

    COMMUNITY
council representatives in Caithness have aligned themselves with opponents of moves to do away with NHS palliative care beds in Thurso. Health activists have been fighting the proposals to axe the inpatient ward at Dunbar Hospital and cutbacks on opening times of its minor injuries unit. North Highland Community Health Partnership insists patient care will suffer if it does not shift resources from the hospital to community-based rehabilitation services.

INSIDE...bulldozers have moved in to start the long-awaited transformation of John O’ Groats. Much of the derelict House Hotel is being levelled to make way for a new luxury, self catering development. Together with 24 detached lodges on adjoining land, the £6 million venture is due to open next summer, in a joint project between upmarket holiday company Natural Retreats and site owners, heritage Great Britain. Development agencies believe the regeneration of the area will spark a rolling programme of improvements that will finally realise the income-generating potential of the popular tourist haunt.

    HIGHLAND
Council has been urged to take seriously, the result of a statutory consultation on a plan to build two new primary schools in Wick at a cost of £20 million. The plea was made at a meeting of Caithness Presbytery of the Church of Scotland. Members were supportive of the plan but expressed “the strong hope” the local authority will listen to what is said, during the consultation process, which lasts until September 23.

s heading for an energy-based economic boom comparable in scale to the herring trade and the nuclear industry of the 19th and 20th centuries, according to the chairman of Scrabster Harbour Trust. William Calder says the combinations of marine renewable in the Pentland Firth and the expansion of oil operations to the west of Shetland, represents a huge opportunity for the far North. And he described Scrabster, where work has just begun on a £20 million redevelopment, as being “in the epicentre” of this activity.

    A RENEWABLE
energy firm has defended its plans to create a wind turbine “corridor” alongside the northernmost stretch of the A9. RWE npower renewables is consulting local people on its interest in development land alongside its existing 21-turbinecheme on the Causewaymire south of Spittal. It insists its intention, to put up a further 13 on adjoining land at Achkeepster, is in line with guidance from planning authorities on the clustering of developments. But protesters have condemned the proposa,l which they claim, will further blight the look of the area and the lives of local residents.

    A CAITHNESS
police chief said that statistics showing the number of incidents reported to officers, does not indicate that Wick is “in the grip of a crime wave”. Area Chief Inspector Matthew Reiss said that figures released for August were similar to those for the rest of the year. The Royal Burgh of Wick Community Council heard that staff at Wick Police Station dealt with 502 incidents during August.

AND FINALLY...have you ever wondered what the Queen Mother and her guests ate at the Castle of Mey. Well, now you can find out, thanks to a new book which gives recipes for some of her favourite dishes along with anecdotes from member of staff. The late Queen Mum loved her holiday home. In August 1990 she was reported as saying: “ I wait with impatience for August to come round each year when I can once more, look out under these wide skies over the Pentland Firth, or enjoy the distant view to the south to Morven and the Sutherland hills. Caithness means so much to me.” A Taste of Mey has been compiled by Christina Murray, wife of James Murray, managing director of the Cast and Gardens of Mey and gives a rare insight into the life of the Queen Mother and her time at the castle.
