Default Major charity event hit by weather but...

    Relay for Life raised £125,000

GALES and rain forced the cancellation of a major fundraising event in Thurso.
The annual event, at Sir George’s Park, Thurso, was to have run for 12 hours but had to throw in the towel at 2am yesterday, four hours before it was due to finish.
More than 850 people had braved the dire conditions to support the 70 teams. But despite the elements, the event raised a gratifying £125,000.
The atrocious weather caused problem elsewhere. A house in South Road, Wick, where two mm of rain was recorded in the space of 24 hours, was flooded. It might have escaped had a major drainage scheme not been put back in TranServe Scotland's programme because of budget pressure.
At sea, Thurso lifeboat was called out to assist a cargo ship, the Norholm, which got into difficulties west of the Pentland Firth and was in danger of being swept ashore.
    It was escorted to Scrabster.
