DISTILLERY PUTS UP CASH TO TRAIN POTENTIAL LIFEBOAT CREW

The most northerly mainland distillery in UK has signed a sponsorship deal to help train new volunteers for the local lifeboat.

Old Pulteney Distillery at Wick will donate £2 from the sale of special bottles of their single malt Scotch over the Christmas period.

The money will go towards the training of up to 30 new volunteers.

Iain Baxter, the distillery's senior brand manager, said: "Because we are based in Wick we are connected with the social history of the town, especially with the herring fishing industry. "Because of that, we have always looked to get involved with maritime things.

"This deal with the RNLI will be beneficial to all of us. The training that we will pay for is vital for the lifeboat service." A spokeswoman for the RNLI said: "We are always looking for funding for various reasons but this money will help our Train One, Save Many campaign, which provide vital training to allow volunteers to go to sea. "This money will go along way to help train new volunteers." She added that the whisky company, which has a history of lifeboat support in the north, had approached them offering the sponsorship, and they were delighted the cash would assist with their crew training programme.
