Rail crossings should have barriers
INDEPENDENT inspectors have urged rail chief to fit barriers at every open level crossing in the Highlands.
It follows an investigation triggered by a horrific accident in Caithness that claimed the lives of three members of the same family, has led to a raft of new safety recommendations.
These include of digital cameras at some sites to catch rogue motorists and stiffer penalties for drivers who ignore stop signals. Officials at the Rail Accident Investigation Branch drew up a list of 32 open crossing out of thde 115 in the UK that they consider to be particularly dangerous and 13 were in the Highlands.
