Default A Wick lad with international titles under his belt

Luke hopes to kick-start fundraising for a crack
at a world title in U.S.
AT the tender age of 10 you would imagine that Luke McDowall has a long way to go in the competitive world of martial arts.
But you’d be wrong, for he holds the Scottish, British and European titles in the growing sport of Kuk Sool Won, in his age and grade group.
Now, Luke, of Queen’s Square, Wick, is setting his sights on a world crown. The youngster first took an interest in the Korean discipline – a systematic study of all the traditional fighting arts and history of that country-at the age of five, and joined his local club, in Wick.
Since then, the primary six Pulteneytown School pupil has amazed expert exponents and his own community- he was the youngest ever to receive its junior sports award- with his progress and achievements, winning his first of four consecutive Scottish titles, a year later.
At last year’s European Championships, in Kings Lynn, where he was the only Scottish competitor, a judge told him: “You should be proud of yourself, flying the flag for Scotland”.
His mum, Suzanne, and dad, Alexander said that Luke had worked hard for his success . However, they were quick to acknowledge the massive contribution from his instructor Bobby McRoberts and the financial backing from his grandparents, Sadie and Oagie Farmer.
Mrs McDowall said: “He would never have made it without them. Going to the tournaments is an expensive business.”
Isn’t it a bit nerve wracking competing in the big events? Luke said: “I’am usually a little nervous until I get over the first section and then I’m okay.”
Meanwhile, the talented Luke who is currently working towards black belt status, is practicing for the world championships in Texas, next year, but, given that it will take a four-figure sum to get there, he’s going to need a helping hand financially.
The family is currently seeking grant aid from various agencies but, as kuk sool won is not a mainstream sport let alone a team one, raising the necessary funds to make his dream come true, could be an uphill battle.
