    Default Fit's in 'e Groat 'e day?

John O’ Groat Journal review: May 27, 2011

THE paper leads with the shock news that fourteen members of the Wick High School parent council have resigned, amid claims that the school is facing a crisis. They are said to be unhappy that their concerns are not being taken into consideration by senior management. Matters came to a head at a meeting on Tuesday night, leaving the council with only four members, according to Professor Iain Baikie. Professor Baikie, who has been chairman since the council was formed in 2007, said he felt his position had become intolerable and that he could no longer work with senior management at the school. The rector, Mr McIntyre would not comment on the resignations of the committee members, but said he believed the school has a very positive future.

THE other story on the front page, tells of confusion over whether the county will be visited by the Olympic torch when it tours the UK before the London 2012 games opening ceremony. The torch kicks off its tour at Land’s End and will visit the Northern Isles as part of the 70-day journey, but speculation remains about a stop in Caithness. Local MSP Rob Gibson called on the UK Olympics minister, Jeremy Hunt, to officially include John O’ Groats in the route.

INSIDE, a Thurso woman is contesting a ban on taking dogs into the town’s cemetery. Katrina Gordon was surprised to see the newly-erected signs at the gates of the graveyard. Challenging their legality, under freedom-to-roam rights, she has resolved to pay no heed to them. She said: “This ban causes me considerable inconvenience as my elderly parents live in St Andrew’s Drive and visiting them, using this route, is part of my daily dog-walking-routine.

BELL-RINGERS hosted a ring –from-scratch day, at St John’s Episcopal Church in Wick. It invited members of the Poltney Bell Ringers and the Thursday Morning ringers branch of the Caithness Handbell ringers, to join in the challenge of learning a new piece of music in a day, and performing it in a concert to round off the event.

FARMERS who marked their stock through Mey Selections can look forward to receiving annual bonuses in the future. The move was unanimously passed at the annual general meeting of North Highland Products Ltd, the company which runs the food brand. Paid at the end of the year, at the discretion of directors, the bonuses would be in addition to the established premiums paid for livestock sold, under the brand name. The proposal reflects an upturn in the fortunes of the Wick- based company which turned a £187,000 loss, in 2009, into a £51,000 profit last year.

THERE’S a page of reports from Wick Sheriff Court and a half page of pictures from the inaugural Bower and Crossroads Highland Games plus an advertising feature on Lybster. James Johnston gazes skywards to consider the help that the space race is contributing to mankind’s survival, and a modest letters-to-the-editor slot and some busy sports pages.

A NUMBER of local martial art devotees have been inspired by a visit from the founder of their discipline. Seventy-two-year-old In Hyuk Suh led a group of world masters in kuk sool won, on a stopover in Thurso, during their current tour of the UK. The students from schools in Thurso, Wick and Mey, were enthralled by a demonstration of the Korean martial art, at Thurso High School’s games hall.

WICK ACADEMY take on Rothes away, tomorrow, on the second of the back-to-back matches and would like nothing better that to complete a double win over the Speysiders. Meanwhile, the question of the new managership has yet to be resolved, with the club reiterating that it will be taking all the time it needs, to select the right candidate from a short leet of five.

AND finally..Manson Grant of the Dynamos has been short-listed in four categories in this year’s European Country Music Association. He is one of 10 nominations for European Entertainer of the Year.
