    “ENERGY IN CAITHNESS” PHOTOGRAPHY COMPETITION

    The Caithness International Science Festival has been running science events for 10 years. To celebrate, Festival organiser Science O3 is launching a photography competition for local students and amateur photographers.

    The 2012 Festival’s theme will be “Energy in Caithness”. Photographs exploring this theme can be submitted by email to: scienceo3@kelvinprobe.com or via the Science O3 Facebook page. Hard copies of photos can also be submitted to the Science O3 office c/o KP Technology, 12A Burn Street, Wick KW1 5EH.

    Photographs submitted electronically should be in JPEG format, at least 1.5MB and no larger than 5MB and available at a sufficiently high resolution (at least 300dpi) for printing.

    The competition will have the following categories for entrants:

    · Primary P1 – P4;
    · Primary P5 – P7;
    · 11 – 18 years of age; and
    · Over 18 years.

    Only one entry per individual will be accepted. Entries should also include the entrant’s full name, age, address, phone number and email address and a short caption to accompany the photograph. A selection of photographs may be used in future Caithness International Science Festivals.

    Award-winning photographer John Baikie will judge the finalist entries and prizes will be awarded at a ceremony at Caithness Horizons in September. A “people’s choice” award, run through the Facebook site, will also be held, where the public can vote for their favourite photograph.

    The winner of the Over-18’s section will receive a (£100) cash prize for photographic equipment. Winners in the Primary and 11-18 age groups will receive an hour’s tutorial with John Baikie. Runners up in each category and the winner of the “people’s choice” vote will each receive book tokens.

    The closing date for entries is 5.00pm on Friday, 2nd September 2011. Any questions can be forwarded to helen@kptechnology.ltd.uk.

    We've had some excellent entries submitted so far to our competition. The theme is "Energy in Caithness" - it could be a peat stack, the power of the sea, the seemingly endless energy of children ... the possibilities are enormous! So, if you think you have a photo which shows energy in some form, why not enter it?
    There is a £100 cash prize for the over 18's winner and the primary and 11-18's group winners will win an hour's photography tutorial with award-winning professional photographer John Baikie. Entries will also be exhibited at Caithness Horizons in October.
    Entries close on 2nd September. You can submit your entries to to: mailto:scienceo3@kelvinprobe.com or (for hard copies) the office of Science O3 at 12A Burn Street, Wick KW1 5EH.

    We’ve received some great entries in our “Energy in Caithness” competition so far. We are also pleased to announce that, based on feedback we have received, we are expanding the competition in the following ways:

    1. We are creating a separate “Open” category for entries, open to photographs based on any subject. We are looking for a selection of your best photos that highlight your skill as a photographer - travel, nature, landscapes and people … the possibilities are endless. A £100 cash prize will be awarded to the winner of the “Open” category and runners-up will receive book tokens.

    2. In both the “Energy in Caithness” and “Open” categories, we will be accepting up to 5 photos per entrant.

    3. The closing date for the competition has been extended to Friday, 16th September 2011.
    So, if you have some excellent photographs that you would like to share with us, send them, along with your full details to scienceo3@kelvinprobe.com.

    Some of the entries received to date can be viewed on the Science O3 facebook page: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Scienc...65540440174348

    We had a brilliant night in Caithness Horizons last night - congratulations to all of our winners, runners-up and shortlisted finalists and well done to everyone who entered a picture in Science O3's "Energy in Caithness" competition. The standard was extremely high and we received many beautiful and striking images.

    A very special thank you to our judge, John Baikie, who has given his time so generously and offered comments on each of the finalist entries. John's contribution as judge helped to make the competition such a success and he has kindly donated his time for a photography masterclass for the junior winners.

    Sincere thanks also to Caithness International Science Festival patron John Thurso MP, who attended our awards ceremony and presented prizes to the runners-up and winners of each category.

    You can see all of the finalists and a selection of entries at Caithness Horizons for the next two weeks (until Saturday, 15th October). The Science O3 Facebook page also has a complete gallery of entries: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Scienc...65540440174348
