    Can anybody recommend someone or some firm that will sort out the mysteries of Income Tax

    It's not a mystery its just that you refuse to acknowledge it. I remember it well I used to be the same.
    Go and see an accountant. It probably wont cost anything for a few minutes of their time.

    Provided your not looking to avoid any tax (or even worse evade any!) then they are actually a really good source of help.

    I'm afraid that HMRC get it wrong, very wrong, very frequently!
    I have had a rolling battle with them for two years where they keep requesting outrageous amounts of tax on items that are not due tax.

    ALWAYS question them.
