Default Knife offence means longer detention

Teen has to serve part of fireraising sentence plus an additional term for a breach of the peace

A WICK teenager, who committed a knife offence while out on licence from a young offenders institution, has had part of his remaining sentence implemented.
Wick Sheriff Court was told, today, that John Munro had received a two-year detention sentence for fireraising and had committed the knife offence four weeks after his early release.
The 19-year-old would have had 337 days to serve but for his release and Sheriff Andrew Berry restored 200 days of the sentence.
The knife offence occurred on Christmas Eve, when Munro was then living in the Kirkhill area of Wick. Householders in Murchison Street, Wick who looked out to see what the commotion was, observed Munro, bare-chested and brandishing a bread knife.
When asked about his behaviour by police, the accused replied: “I don’t know...just drunk, I think”
The court was told that he remembered nothing of the incident which led to him admitting a breach of the peace.
Munro received an additional six-month detention for that offence and will start a two-year probation order when he leaves the young offenders institution. The knife sentence is backdated to December 24 when Munro was taken into custody.
Sentencing, him, Sheriff Andrew Berry said he had to bring home to others, the seriousness of the knife offence.

    No licence

IN a separate case, Leslie Bremner of Tain, Castletown, was fined £300 when he admitted carrying on business as a scrap metal dealer for the year ending September 11, 2010, without a licence.
The court was told that it had been a sideline to the 36-year-old’s main business as haulage contractor and the scrap enterprise had since been discontinued.
