Acer Laptop problem

Hi, My Acer laptop has started acting up these last few days. It's a few years old but has never caused me any trouble before.
When turning on the laptop it prompts me that the computer was not shut down properly (caused by my son just holding down the on/off button as it froze the very last time it was working)

I select the 'start windows normally' (which is highlighted for me to select) but nothing loads. It just sits on a blank screen. I've given it plenty of time to load up thinking it's just being slow but still nothing. The mouse pointer can still be seen on the screen but nothing else - i end up having to hold down the on/off button again just to get it to turn off again.
This is the first time it's ever done anything like this. I left the laptop alone for a few days and tried again today - but still the same

I'm hoping someone on here might recommend someone to take a look at it. I'm no good with computer stuff so i dont want to muck around with it anymore incase i just do more harm than good.

I understand it may have just come to the point where i might have to look into buying a new one, if that's the case i'm hoping someone might be able to save my photos and music if possible?

Any recommendations on someone who can look at this for me, please get in touch.

This possible solution to your problem may help, but you need to have all you files backed up elsewhere, or all will be lost to that big file skip in the sky, never to be seen again

I do hope this works


Alt+ F10 at the first Acer Screen you see when you power the unit on. or when you are in windows it is accessed through Start> Acer Empowering Technology Folder>Acer Erecovery Manager. it will prompt you to create a password after that click Restore at the bottom and choose Restore to Factory Default and confirm by clicking OK.

make sure the unit stays plugged in the entire time it will run about 15-20 minutes and show you a Copying From Partition screen and a loading bar while it processes.
*Note this will overwrite C:

safemode command prompt only

if that works

you'll eventually get to a screen with a flashing cursor _

type chkdsk c: /f /r <hit return/enter>

that should fix it.

all you've got is a corrupt profile for the login name that eveyone uses.

I agree who the hell suggests what is essentially a reformat and reinstall for something without troubleshooting. The only situation that's advisable is when you have something like a net-café or university lab where a client can be automatically rebuilt in 20 minutes.

Anyway if none of that works get back to us with the operating system.

I wasn't keen about restoring to factory settings as i've not got everything backed up (Think i better start doing so from now on!) so i went with dx100uk's advice and i'm happy to report all is well!

no i was just guy that said it first

std stuff

always try and get chkdsk running whenever file access or missing file errors pop up.

it can ofcourse be done at anytime
choose the drive you want to do it on from my computer under start
just right click the drive / properties / disk tools
and tick the boxes
from there it will alert you it will do it on the next reboot.

always worth doing it once a month.
