Highlander where do you find all these odd creatures?
Common blue or small blue, beats me.
So i sent copy of your pic to butterfly site for I.D.
    Small blue seems most likely.
I used to have a great butterfly book, but like the Summer it's vanished.

    Answer
This is a female Common Blue... some are completely Brown... others have the blue radiating from the body, fading to brown as in your example.

    Seems i was wrong again.

I did see a plain blue butterfly one day, but was so angry with myself that i did not take the camera, so i went out looking again and saw this one, then another one, and another one lol, there were red admirals, and common whites, these i posted on birdsite a while ago, they are so lovely and delicate, they were found out at our farm 5 miles from thurso.

    A Fantastic Red Admiral.
All the butterflies i seem to find are damaged or wont settle, must be the wind we get in Caithness.

    Sporran,

I don't think your pic is a Monarch but rather a Swallowtail.

    Have a look here:

You are right, norscot. I have just checked into it, and the one pictured in your link is the Papilio Machaon aka the Old World Swallowtail, aka the Common Yellow Swallowtail.

The one in my two photos is the Papilio Glaucus aka the Eastern Tiger Swallowtail. And apparently, it's the state butterfly for where I live, as well as four other states in the USA!

I am living for today, always remembering yesterday, and looking forward to tomorrow!

Found this Small tortoiseshell in my living room at the weekend.
Is it just me or is there a lot more Butterflies this year, or am I taking more notice of them.

Seeing such a beautiful butterfly this late in the year in Caithness is quite a surprise.

Kas, I agree completely, there have been loads flying about.

Whilst out and about, we found a friendly Red Admiral, who became very attached to my eldest, so I got some lovely pics of her and her wee chum...
