    Default Sannick beach gathering.

There were over a hundred seals on the beach first thing this morning, but it was the young seals that are starting to realize their sexuality that provide the more interesting pictures.
The gathering for those who are unaware takes place every year from September into October, soon after the gathering older seals disperse to the pup beaches. The large Bulls at the gathering seem to have very little interest in the behaviour of the younger studs who were frolicking in the surf with the young females. The behaviour of the large bulls is very different on a pup beach, where they stake their claim and fight any who trespass.

    Give me a cuddle.

    Whispering sweet nothings.

Great set of photos Colin and yes it is so very special to see them gathering there in large numbers, Caithness should be proud of it's wild llife heritage.

What wonderful pictures - you have captured the scenes perfectly - there is art and knowledge of seal behaviour there - very impressive
Thank you for showing them to us

On Sannick beach the beasties gather
    Early morning, romance blooms
Big bad bull gets in a lather
    On the shore Atlantic booms

    Flipper touching tender flipper
What to lad gives sex appeal -
Is she game to have a nipper?
In the waves their love to seal

    'Salmon's coming!' says his dishy
    'Maybe me!' retorts the lad
She swims off to catch a fishy
He's left high and dry and mad

    Romance really isn't easy
Twenty stone and out for fun
Most of time it is quite breezy
Lie on rock and wait for sun

But you can get down and dirty
Once a year at Sannick Bay
Where seal-birds are coy and flirty
Keep the boy employed all day

What seabird does with pictures, you do with words
