The bird is a male Pennant-winged Nightjar Macrodipteryx vexillarius. It is found in much of central Africa from eastern Nigeria across to southern Sudan and south to Angola and Zimbabwe. It is a locally common intra-African migrant breeding in the south from August to February and moving north January to September
