Confused is well named as it can be tricky to positively identify, particularly distinguishing it from Dusky Brocade. Although there is an overlap in flight period with Dusky Brocade in July, Confused continues to be seen much later and into September. The main identification points distinguishing it from Dusky Brocade are the lack of a clear W mark in the cross line near the outer edge of the wing and the projection of scales at the base of the trailing edge as shown in this photograph. It overwinters as a larva underground and the larvae feed on roots and lower stems of grasses.
