    Is it a painted lady?

Looks more like a fritillary, probably Dark Green Fritillary.

I thought it was a fritillary of some kind, but can't find any that have the same wing markings, ie the row of white spots along the edge of the wings, despite having been through two books and several web sites, hence the queston.

    Hi LIZZ

    It's a Small Pearl-bordered Fritillary (Boloria selene).

I don't think that's right. Check the underwing pattern at http://www.butterfly-conservation.or...atures=&Family=

Nothing like Lizz's photo 2, which is right for Dark Green.

Thanks for all the input, I sent the pictures on to Butterfly Conservation Scotland and they have identified it as a Dark Green Fritillary .
They would appreciate any sightings of The Pearl Bordered with location and picture if possible and any other Fritillaries that you might come across.
I also got a very interesting leaflet from them .
