    It looks like a poplar hawk moth, caterpillars are really amazing

    Thanks Spurtle! They certainly are amazing, I'd never seen this one before - I have many a happy memory of trying to find hairy brochit's with my sister in the hill when we were at the peats as bairns.

    We may be organising a walk here to find moth caterpillars at the end of the month - come along - it will be advertised and we might mention it in the forum - we usually have Poplar Hawk larvae as well a host of other larger ones.
