Default Caithness Moths - Wood Tiger

Wood Tiger is locally distributed throughout the UK, although it has become very rare in the south east it is more widely distributed in Scotland. There are few records from Caithness, mainly from Dunnet Forest and Dunnet Dunes. Inspite of its name it is found on moorland as well as in woodland. The male can be seen on sunny afternoons flying erratically in search of females which are more sluggish. The adult flies in June and July having overwintered as a half grown caterpillar low down in vegetation
