This delicate Small White Wave was one of three caught in the south of the County and it is the first time that the species has been recorded in Caithness. The nearest record is in Perthshire and it appears to have been found in only ten other locations in Scotland. It is found in mature broadleaved woodland where the larvae feed on hazel, hornbeam, birches and wild roses. The adult is on the wing from May to early July having over wintered as a pupa in plant debris. Not a great photo but it was very active!
