Another of the confusing small pugs, Larch Pug holds it wings at rest in the typical pug position. Points towards its identification are the white spot on the thorax and the well demarcated dark cross line which angles sharply towards the leading edge of the wing. The adult is on the wing between May and July having over wintered as a pupa in loose earth. As its name indicates, the larvae feed on larch. Its status in Caithness is not known as this is only the second record since 1975, but it is probably present where larch is established.
