Caithness Moths - Hebrew Character
A very common Spring moth, Hebrew Character is found in a very wide range of habitats. It takes its name from the dark mark on the wing which is said to be similar to a letter in the Hebrew alphabet. This mark varies in intensity from black to a light brown close to the ground colour of the wing; this example is mid way between the extremes. In Caithness it appears in April, often in quite large numbers, having over winter as a pupa in an underground cocoon, with the fully formed adult inside. By mid May numbers have fallen away dramatically.
