The magnificent Emperor Moth is just taking to the wing in Caithness and will continue flying until the end of May. Although typically found on heathland and moorland the larvae eat a wide range of woody plants so the adult moth can be found in a wide range of habitats and will sometimes even appear at lit windows. This female was caught at the light trap in my garden last night. The males, which have orangish brown underwings and are generally less grey than the females, fly during the day when it is sunny and can easily be overlooked as a butterfly.
