£500 million investment into Faslane

Today the UK govt announced it was going to invest £500 million into Faslane up dating sea defences and infrastructure and relocating the entire Submarine fleet on the Clyde. This should create up to 8000 jobs and bolster the areas manufacturing and supporting industries. Where most areas would be overjoyed at such a massive investment into an area the SNP have complained it is interfering with a vote they intend to have on Trident.Trident has always been an issue for the SNP but as of yet defence is not a devolved issue and there is no likelihood of it ever being so, as of yet the only point the SNP have made on defence is their complete inability to take national security seriously instead of using it as petty political point scoring exercise.

and to think the SNP wanted to shut the place down.

That nasty Chancellor George Osborne announcing more than £500m of contracts for the Royal Navy's submarine base at Faslane.The awful government said the work, which is due to begin in 2017, would secure 6,700 jobs and create thousands more.
What is Westminster thinking about doing that to Scotland, investing money and securing jobs for the area, how could they? Awful people.

That, or words to that affect is what the SNP are saying this morning.

If you accept that having more submarines in Scotland makes it a greater target, the by default you must accept there is someone wanting to target Scotland in the first place.
What do you suggest disarm and hope that the nasty people that are the threat will say oh look Scotland's disarmed let's leave them alone.
Or might you consider that having the UKs nuclear deterrent based here may be the biggest stick you could possibly have to ensure no one touches you.
From experience bullies tend to pick on the weak and defenceless not those able to look after themselves.

Why does an investment in infrastructure and more jobs = bribery.

Isn't it just proof that being part of the Union brings prosperity to an area which the Scottish Goverment has failed to do anything with.
I'm sure the 8000 people who are going to get jobs won't be complaining nor all the business's that'll reap the rewards of having the entire submarine fleet based in the area is bound to bring.

If you choose to live, and brought your children up in Caithness, then you are a downright hypocrite. You have no idea the untold damage Dounereay and Vulcan could have caused if they had gone pear shaped. Or was the danger quite acceptable because of the money it brought to the area? What you and people like you conveniently forget, the only reason Dounreay was sited where it was by the Government of the day was because if it blew half of Scotland away it did'nt matter, but hey that was an acceptable risk - because of the money.

One word, Dounreay.....and we're all part of the same hypocrisy....bribery is to nice a word to use...focus on hypocrisy, because thats what this situation is

OK what replaces Dounreay then ? Faslane's future is now secured and the jobs direct and indirect......am I to understand that Caithnessians posting on here, anti faslane investment rants, want to reduce faslane to a post dounreay scenario.... ie nowt doing ?? That'll be 2 chunks of Scotland with little happening....thankfully one area has been saved, question is.....what will save Caithness post Dounreay ???

Well given how one faction don't want nuclear, another don't want fracking then we have the anti wind turbine lobby maybe we can all go back to living in hovels supported by the state and rely on the occasional handout from tourists passing through en route to Orkney.

Wind turbines arent "employers of any scale ", fracking....dunno...in the absence of wave tidal power developments, the only real option has to be nuclear based, but thats not gonna happen eh ?

Not with the current political parties who insist on always running round screaming the skies falling in for every possible energy source. It saddens me that this nation has been held to ransom by small pressure groups and activists scaremongering the Nuclear Industry. We used to be world leaders in this particular method of energy production now look at us. Technology has moved forward since the vast majority of Nuclear reactors where built, we certainly don't have the problems Japan has with all its geological issues but many will wag their finger and scream Fukushima when you mention nuclear but I'd ask when was the last time we suffered from tsunamis in this part of the world or major earthquakes.

The SNP have been anti nuclear for over 30 years so whats changed ??

The times have changed, the technology has changed only thing that never changes is their stance on anything that is actually progressive.

Mind at least Faslane will have nice new shiney Nuclear Submarines unlike our what Paul Monaghan SNP wanted for up here a dumping ground for scraping and stripping out old Nuclear Submarines. I know which I feel safer having around.

Seems Scotland isn't quite so anti Trident as the SNP would have us believe if this article is to be believed.
