Family History Research From South Africa
The cost of doing family research from other countries ie. USA, Canada and
within the UK may seem reasonable to their inhabitants but to us in South Africa the pricing is prohibitive. We have an exchange rate of approx.
Rand 13:00 - R 14:00 to 1 Pound! which makes researching through
Scotlandspeople, etc. a luxury. Perhaps the Administrators could look into
this and consider making some concession for us considering that we do have
a fairly large scottish descendency population even though we are at the
southern tip of Africa! Here's hoping. Thanks for your great website which has given me so much information regarding my Sutherland ancestory and for
free!! :)
Family History from South Africa
Hallo Roni,
Yes the cost can add up, but dont hesitate to ask here on Caithness.org for any help you require.
You likely know the free sites - IGI and Freecen and of course graven-images the Latheron graveyard.
If you give your names and dates etc, we'll be pleased to help all we can.
Happy hunting,

Family Research from South Africa
Thanks Trinkie very much for your offer of help. Fred very kindly assisted me
some months ago (listed under DUNBAR SUTHERLAND FAMILY - LATHERON &
SOUTH AFRICA). I am looking for information concerning the parents,
JOHN SUTHERLAND and MARGARET MACRAE, possibly from Dornoch, of my
great, great grandfather ALEXANDER SUTHERLAND, builder, possibly christened at Dornoch 30 December 1807. ALEXANDER was married to
JANE ROBERTSON on 11 December 1846 in the parish of Loth. They are buried in grave no. 12 Lairg Old Churchyard. ALEXANDER died 23.1.1877 aged
68 and JANE died 27.4.1862 aged 39. I am starting to research my paternal
grandmother's family tree (The Mitchell Gates family from Tunbridge Wells, Kent) hence my query regarding the cost of research.
Another up and coming site is Scotland BDM Exchange

Hello Bill,
Greetings from West Gippsland, Victoria, Australia. I have only found your site and forum today, resulting from in-depth research for a Family History site building project, I am hosting. More concisely, one of my great uncles Archer Angus Skinner, born in Victoria in 1890 and served in WW1, married Margaret Green Cormack ( aunty Rita ) in Leith in 1918, before they resettled permanently near Melbourne.
My access to your country's records is quite limited from here, however if my notes are accurate, I believe aunty Rita was born in Wick, to Walter G Cormack (born c1855) and Maggie N. McAlpin in 1889 (born 1859). Rita graduated in 1915 at Edinburgh University with a Master of Arts, and the Uni has just posted a photo I have of her on her graduation day. I have a copy of their marriage certificate, and their marriage bore no children, however I am very intrigued by some old unlabelled photos of Rita, shown with 2 girls whom to my eye, may well easily be sisters.
If I may add, my eyes nearly popped our of my head when I found one of your old Forum archives, mentioning a Walter Cormack, lodged by a P Cormack.
I would really appreciate any leads you may be able to relay back to me, in regard to this enquiry.
In the mean time. warm regards from chilly Victoria, and thanks for your time.
