More Caithness success at the Black Isle Show

Leading prizes in sheep and cattle and horse sections

CAITHNESS breeders were again to the fore, at yesterday's competitions, in the sheep. cattle and horse sections.
The Queen Elizabeth Castle of Mey Trust, Longoe Farm took the top title at the North Country Cheviot pens with a gimmer, by Durran Designer, out of a home-bred ewe by Roadside Rambler, second at Caithness and the same place at the Black Isle last year, as a ewe lamb. The reserve ticket also went over the Ord, with James Mackay, Biggins, Killimster.
Taking the same road with the Texel championship, was Charlie and Isobel Angus, Oldfield, Thurso with a two-crop, home-bred ewe by Castlecairn Narvena, out of a ewe by Baltier Leader, second at Caithness and Sutherland.
The crofter sheep, not MV rosette, went to John Forbes, Boultach, Latheron, with a Texel gimmer bred by Robert Laird, Cambwell, Biggar, champion at Caithness and parish champion at Latheron.
At the cross-sheep pens, Ken Sutherland, Stainland and Sibmister Farms, Thurso, took the reserve with ewe lambs.
Butchers lambs-John Campbell and Co. of Todholes, Thurso, with a pair of Beltex-cross twin lambs by a Beltex ram, bred by Alan Sutherland, Harpsdale, and out of a home-bred Texel-cross ewe, by an Overhouse sire.
In the cattle section, the reserve Highland went to Morven Coghill, Westside, Dunnet, Thurso with Katrine 5th of Burifa, a two-year-old heifer, privately bought from David Glass, in March, champion at Caithness.
And rounding off another successful day for Caithness, was Alasdair Matheson, Halkirk, with the top prize in the Highland pony ridden, with Dunedin Mountain Rose, an eight-year-old mare by Kincardine Ben Macdhui and out of Dunedin May Rose, supreme light horse at the Black Isle on Wednesday and mountain and moorland champion. She was also supreme heavy and light horse champion at Sutherland and reserve supreme at Caithness.
He also took the reserve for Highland pony in hand with Dunedin Roseannah, a three-year-old filly by Dunedin Marksman, and out of Dunedin Rowan, which was second at Caithness and Latheron.
