Can the english variety be cultivated up here?
I did out two in the garden late autumn on the off chance they would survive.

I have a few varieties. The ones I can remember are Munstead, Helmsdale, Hidcote, papillon and Kew Red but i have others too.
I think Hidcote and Munstead are supposed to be 2 of the hardiest.

Mine actually thrive up here but I do keep them in pots and put them in the greenhouse over winter. They hate having wet root balls and it's often that rather than the cold that kills them off.
Personally I wouldn't risk them outside in the ground but then it depends on how exposed you are and as we live next to the sea we're very exposed.

Ive tried planting hidcote and a couple of others which names I forget outside (sheltered areas and Im miles from the sea). They always seem to do really great over the summer then die on me over the winter. Last couple of years Ive just kept them in pots and put into greenhouse over winter....thats been much more successful.
