Oh dear, better be carefull, some of the folks on here posting are on-line a LONG time! are you one of 'em?

There is a strong link between heavy internet use and depression, UK psychologists have said.

The study, reported in the journal Psychopathology, found 1.2% of people surveyed were "internet addicts", and many of these were depressed.

The respondents were aged 16 to 51, with an average age of 21. The authors found that a small number of users had developed a compulsive internet habit, replacing real life social interaction with online chat rooms and social networking sites.

They classed 18 respondents - 1.2% of the total - as "internet addicts". This group spent proportionately more time on sex, gambling and online community websites.

The internet addicts were significantly more depressed than the non-addicted group, with a depression score five times higher.
The average score of the internet-addicted group put them in the category of moderate-to-severe levels of depression.
“ There is no good evidence that the problem is the internet itself ”
"Our research indicates that excessive internet use is associated with depression, but what we don't know is which comes first - are depressed people drawn to the internet or does the internet cause depression?" said Dr Morrison.
"Now we need to investigate the nature of that relationship and consider the issue of causation."
Critics of the research say that internet addiction cannot be diagnosed reliably, and the recruiting method could have resulted in a biased sample.
'Not a big surprise'
Dr Vaughan Bell, from the Institute of Psychiatry at King's College London said that by definition, those identified as "internet addicts" are emotionally distressed, so the conclusions are "not a big surprise".

He added: "There are genuinely people who are depressed or anxious who use the internet to the exclusion of the rest of their lives, but there are similar people who watch too much TV, bury themselves in books or go shopping to excess.
"There is no good evidence that the problem is the internet itself."
Dr Andrew McCulloch, chief executive of the Mental Health Foundation, pointed out that, in some ways, the internet can be helpful.
He said: "To the extent that the internet encourages meaningful friendships and social connections it can be a very good influence on people's lives.
"However, social interaction online should not usually replace an offline social life. We should take note of this study's findings - it suggests that further research in the area is needed."
Sophie Corlett, of the mental health charity Mind, said: "Evidence suggests that active pursuits such as exercise and socialising with people face-to-face are among the factors that help us stay in good mental health.
"Although excessive internet use can't be said to cause mental health problems, if a web addict is substituting meaningful friendships and socialising with virtual contact on the internet, this might have an adverse affect on their mental wellbeing."

I can see why a number of lonely people get involved in forums, if they are perhaps unable to get out and about as they used to, it is a good contact with the outside world, and can keep them up to date on what is happening in the community. But they are lonely people rather than depressed.

Excessive use making you depressed??? I don't know, I don't think so, I suppose it could in some cases, but I'm not convinced. People always seem to become obsessed with something, be it a hobby of even an occupation, many people read all day, others watch the telly all day, I know many people who do all these thing and they seem to be OK. I also have contact now, and have had in the past with very depressed people, but they do not seem to be interested in doing anything. They have usually become depressed through some incident in their life, either major or trivial (it can be either) which has upset them and they do not know how to respond/react to it. Trying to work out why a person becomes depressed is a very tricky question, one which our expert psychologists do not have an answer, they can in somecases be helpful but in the majority of cases the people they are treating are usually drugged to the eyeballs and going about like zombies.

I think these so called specialists are talking nonsense.

I've been depressed and the last think I felt like doing was surfing the net.

It took me all my time to string a sentence together never mind type it out.

I think they've got lonely/isolated people confused with depressed people.:confused

Any excuse to blame the internet, next they'll be blaming that for global warming.

Global Warming?: just two Google searches generates about the same amount of carbon dioxide as boiling a kettle for a cup of tea; http://technology.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/tech_and_web/article5489134.ece

My computer and access to the Internet/email etc has changed my life for the better. I think I would be a very lonely person without it. :)

Up until a few days ago I loved logging on to the Org and enjoyed the banter, even with Crayola and her coven, I loved reading trinkies posts, Tubthumpers odes, even Cedric's jokes, the photograph forum etc etc.
BUT since Fred came back with his anti America posts and conspiracy posts, I have become very depressed, I think the OP's original post has brought it to the foreground.
I am away to lie down in a darkened room, I blame 'e Internet:(

It must be right then if psychologists say it. I better sort myself out fast. Right, I'll away and murder my father and marry my mother...wait a minute that would make me gay. :confused OK right, I'll murder my mother and marry my father and change my name to Electra. I'll maybe throw in a wee bit anal retention to keep me going. ;)

Help...I can't cope any more. I think I'll smash my computer and go and stand on some street corners so I can socialise more.

Bit far for me, I'll set up a Wick branch - you run the Thirsa one.

I'll drag an old sofa onto the mini roundabout by the medical centre and bring some cider, we can sit on the sofa and shout at the traffic all night.:Razz

Sounds like a plan. :D

Once we have things up and running, we could plan a night on here once a month instead of a curry night, just to keep our depression in check. :Razz
